Disneyland commits $1.9 billion for theme park expansion
The DisneylandForward proposal dangles possible projects based on Black Panther, Coco, Frozen, Tangled, Peter Pan, Zootopia, Toy Story and Tron.
By BRADY MACDONALD
UPDATED: January 24, 2024

“Disneyland has committed to spend $1.9 billion over the next decade as part of a long-term planning proposal presented to the city of Anaheim that dangles possible projects based on Wakanda, Zootopia, Frozen and Coco.

“The details of the proposed DisneylandForward development agreement between Disney and the city were released on Tuesday, Jan. 23 during an Anaheim City Council workshop.”

“The plan also calls for Disney to build a 17,000-space eastside parking structure with direct connections from the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway that would be larger than the combined Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking structures.

“Up to three pedestrian bridges over Harbor Boulevard would connect the eastside parking structure with the Disney theme parks while providing access to the hotels, shops and restaurants along the busy street below.”

Disneyland pledges more than $100 million for Anaheim streets, parks, and affordable housing
Disney would also commit to give the city $30 million for affordable housing, according to overview of a proposed development agreement
Michael Slaten

PUBLISHED: January 23, 2024

“Of the $30 million Disney proposed to give Anaheim for affordable housing, half would be paid in the first year and the rest in five years. City officials said it would be the largest corporate contribution to Anaheim for affordable housing.

“The $8 million for parks, if the development agreement is approved as is, would be for the city to use at its discretion. That money could be used to fund a 3-acre park with some amenities, according to the city, or up to five pocket parks within neighborhoods.”

“Disney also proposes to buy some streets from the city for $40 million, including Magic Way, Hotel Way and part of Clementine Street, which officials said is market rate. If Disney doesn’t invest more than the minimum $1.9 billion – at least $2.5 billion over 10 years – then the company would give the city an additional $5 million for street and transportation improvements.

“Planning and Building Director Ted White said street abandonments by cities aren’t uncommon and was even done when Disnelyand was first built.

“The $40 million to buy the streets is part of a $90 million investment Disney proposes to contribute toward funding street improvements, including widening Katella Avenue east and west of Harbor Boulevard. The city would decide how those streets are redesigned, which could include signal upgrades and bike lanes. Anaheim would not proceed with previously planned extensions of Clementine Street and Gene Autry Way.

“Up to $10 million to expand a sewer main line along Katella Avenue near the parks would be paid for by Disney, according to the city.”

“Disneyland has returned to its natural state without any holiday decorations on Main Street or the castle. The Christmas trees in Downtown Disney weren’t removed until last week, and the last of the Disney 100 platinum items disappeared over the weekend. It’s a nice change of pace. Traditionally, the off season means shorter park hours, less entertainment and a slew of refurbishments. But a new month is upon us, and there will be two celebrations going on in the parks! Get ready to discover new foods, groove to live music, and welcome back magical friends to Main Street.

“It’s time to come out of hibernation – join us as we take a look at what’s new and what’s news at the Disneyland Resort.. “
...
“Instead of raising the dead, the area between the attraction and Tiana’s Palace has been razed. While many of the old trees have been chopped down, a few of the historic Magnolia Park trees remain on the side closest to the main walkway. Most of the items that adorn the mansion have been removed, but the hearse still stands at the ready.”
